Yeah, I know that’s not a pelican, not a canary, but pretend with me, k? Today we will talk about emotions, their purpose, recognizing & handling them, and how to pick the right inner voice to listen to….. We have so many!
Newsflash! As a human being, you are a bundle of ever-changing emotions. You have no choice whether you have feelings or not. They are always happening. Why?
Emotions can be likened to the canary in the coal mine. She is always there, hanging out. When the air is good, there is happy singing. When the canary crashes, you know the air quality is not good, and it’s time to get out. Feelings are valuable clues to show what is good or not good for you. Pay attention to them. Keep your canary happy and healthy.
The good news is that you get to choose how to respond to the feelings coursing through you. You can also greatly influence your emotions by the thoughts you habitually think.
Your habitual thoughts make the difference between smacking your thumb with a hammer and streaming curses and angst or smashing your thumb and walking it off while you breathe deeply. It’s all about how you choose to practice responding to your inner voice regularly.
You have a centered, confident, calm, and courageous inner voice, as well as many others. There may be the voice of your anxious third-grade self, belligerent 11-year-old, wounded 15-year-old, angry 25-year-old, or a parent, sibling, teacher, or boss voice in your head. Listen to the voice that has your best interest at heart. The one that says, “Take all the time you need.” or “keep trying, you’ve got this.” Listen to the loving, supportive voice/thought that makes your canary sing.
Hold on to that thought; send the others away. Practice creating thoughts that will send your canary into a loving song filled with excitement and confidence. This week for self-care, make a list of the thoughts that make you feel good and take time to read, and practice them every day. You’ll be glad you did.
Your canary and your heart will be happy! Have a great self-care week- you’re worth it!
All my love,
